Sunday- January 22, 2012: Hudson Valley Grand Prix Awards Luncheon American Legion Lodge - Waywayanda Avenue - Middletown, NY. As for the Awards Luncheon, it's a catered luncheon so bring your appetite. The ceremony starts right after the second Winter Series 5K , only a couple of miles from the race site. Sunday- January 15, 2011: The Newburgh Winter Series (#1) 10:00 AM 1.8 mile race start at Thomas Bull Memorial Park in Campbell Hall next to Montgomery in Orange County Park, only 35 minutes from Rock Hill. This is a delightful series of five races, with distances of 1.8 (Jan 15), 2.3 (Jan 29), 3.1 (Feb 12), 4.0 (Feb 26) and 1.8 miles (March 4). Points are awarded for participation (one point per race); placing (10, 7, 5, 3, 1); and consistency (five point bonus for completing all five races). The cost is minimal ($25 for the series of 5 races, or $6 per race), the shirts are lovely (long-sleeved with no ads!); the awards ceremony after the last race is special - breakfast for all, trophies for many. Saturday- January 14, 2012: Celebrate Life Training Run #1 9:00am start time. Meet at The Lodge at Rock Hill- Rock Hill, NY. The course will be marked with yellow arrows at turns only. Water and Gatorade will be placed in bright bags and are at miles 3, 4.5, 8.5, and just short of 10 (approximate). The course can be shortened easily to 6.5 & 9 miles for those just starting out and not wanting to do the full distance. Written directions and maps will also be provided. Water and Gatorade for all training runs are provided by Race Director Myriam Loor (845)866-1345. If you would like to be added to the e-mail list for the training runs, please contact Myriam. Thursday- December 22, 2011: Pre-Holiday Cheer 5:30 pm at Bernie’s Restaurant. The address is 277 Rock Hill Drive, Rock Hill, NY(Bing) (right next door to The Lodge where the Celebrate Life Half Marathon takes place). Message from President Kim: "We will fore-go next weeks Thursday night run/walk and instead gather for some good old fashioned fun without the run! They are offering a wine special for us (of course, there is a full bar-at your own expense) and we will have a little food also. Be there at 5:30 and we'll go until……………. whenever!!! I don’t think anyone will shoot me for skipping next week’s run……. We deserve a little break (yes, this is Kim talking… rest? Break? What?) If you want to go ahead with a run go for it! Saturday- December 17, 2011: Wilds of Masthope 5K & 10K Races Start time is 9:00 am for the 5k and 10:00 am for the 10k Entry fee: $5 (sign up on race day). Chip timed, no awards, no t-shirt. There will be self-serve water stations on the course. There will be post-race food. You can race both races for $5. Friday- December 16, 2011 "Dutch Party" Let's Celebrate together for the Holidays at NADIA's on Main Street in Hurleyville (opposite the park) at 7:00 pm! It's time for merriment, enjoy each other's company and help keep a local business alive through the winter! Friday November 4, 2011: Goody Bag Stuffing Night beginning at 4:00 in the afternoon. We will meet at the Falling Colors race location, the Emerald Green Entertainium on Old Sackett Road, Rock Hill, NY. Not only will we get the goody bags ready, but we will set up the tables and help put foil around the pots of the trees which are generously donated, each year, by Tom and Maryann Manza, Manza Family Farms, as the awards. The club will provide Pizza!!! You don’t have to be there at 4:00! If you can, fine, if not, come when you can. We’ll be there. If you know of a business that would like to get their name out there and would like to provide pens, magnets, flyers, anything that would advertise their business to go in the goody bags, feel free to bring those items. We are going to stuff approximately 200 bags but that does not mean that’s how many items they need to provide. If it’s 25 – 50, whatever, it’s fine. It is a win win proposition. You get great food and an easy way to do more for this local race with national quality that has done so much good in the Hudson Valley. Wednesday October 26, 2011: Orange Runners Club has invited all Sullivan Striders to a Halloween run. DRESS IN COSTUME and bring a camera – should be interesting! This is a low key approx. 2 mile run through downtown Middletown. Meeting in the James Street parking lot (behind Old Erie and across from Mdtn. City Hall) at 5:30’ish. After this fun run everyone is heading into My House Sports Pub located at 14 North Street (you can walk there from the James Street Parking lot) where the fun will continue. Cash bar and a full menu is available (known for their wings, burgers, sandwiches, etc….) Getting the two clubs together… need I say more??? Thanks for the invite ORC!!! Saturday October 15, 2011: Daffodil bulb planting(8:30 am) & group photo(10:00 am) Striders meet across from Vino at the old VFW building on Broadway (where we did the prior planting). There is a rain date of October 22nd. This is spearheaded through the Sullivan Renaissance and The Monticello Beautification Group. Daffodils are synonymous with Spring and symbolize rebirth and new beginnings. Through this project, there will be a total of 8,000 daffodil bulbs planted among 36 planting beds along Broadway in Monticello. It will be a sight to see come Spring in 2012!!! Sunday, October 9, 2011 Castle to River - A Historic Run 10K, 5K & Kids 1 Mile 8:00 am. All races leave from the Philipstown Community Center. The 10K race takes a wooded trail up to the historic Osborn Castle with views of the majestic Hudson River and West Point. Racers will circle the Castle, head back down the mountain on a different trail, back over Route 9D, to the Hudson River, past the Garrison Train Station and Gazebo and back to the Community Center. Saturday August 27, 2011: How do we get kids to run? By working with them to build a cross country running trail that eighty kids and adults have spent time building by hand over the past two years. On Saturday August 27, 2011, give an hour of your efforts any time between 8:00am and 4:00pm. Consistent with the mission of the Sullivan Striders and Road Runners Clubs of America, help promote distance running by assisting with this fun cross country trailbuilding project at Fallsburg Middle School / High School. Chris Sutton of Sutton Underground Excavating has generously donated two Saturdays of his time with his six foot wide mini-excavator to pull the stumps and boulders out of the trail so it is more runnable. Your help is needed to smooth a section of trail after he passes. Many hands make light the work! Bring work gloves, frozen water bottle, wear comfortable outdoor clothing. Since starting a track & field and cross country program at Fallsburg Central School between 1986-1989, Brian Cavanagh has put in many hours behind the scenes to promote our sport of distance running. Now that cross country is being reintroduced at Fallsburg for grades 7-9 (ages 12-15) with Brian coaching, he and the kids need your help in smoothing the trail that has been built over the last two years. Three-thousand one hundred feet of trail through wooded areas of school property has been routed, downed trees and branches have been removed, branches growing into the trail have been trimmed back, stepping stones have been set in muddy areas, and signs have been constructed to identify the trail. By combining the three-thousand one hundred feet of trail with loops on grass around the school and its athletic fields, we will have a 1.5 mile cross country course for this year and a 5k course for the years ahead. If you've never done trailbuilding before, this is the time to start. It is a very enjoyable process and there is a lot of camaraderie, fun and satisfaction. Thursday August 18, 2011: Sullivan Striders Run/Walk - Alternate Location Meet at Sam Miller's house in Monticello, NY(Bing) at 5:30 pm for a 5:45 pm start. You will know you're at the right place when you see the stone walls at the head of the driveway with the two lions standing guard on top of them - on the north side of the road. Sam will be leading a run/walk around his neck of the woods which is close to where Tom & Maryann Manza live. I've been told there will be ~FOOD~ so bring a dessert, some chips or a beverage and come party with another cool Strider member and company.
Wednesday August 17-18, 2011 200K Relay Race Join the JRunners running club as they raise money for OHR MEIR. The race starts in Brooklyn at 9:30 pm on Aug. 17th and finishes at Sullivan County Community College where there will be a huge party at 2:30 pm along with 8th Day performing! There will be balloon rides for the kids, food and much more, not to mention the dedicated runners arriving from their long race. Everyone is welcome so go out and support this great event. Directions from Sullivan County; take exit 112, go through Wurtsboro & at the top of the hill go left on Horton Rd (right past where you come out from the Roosa Gap Run) Take Horton Rd. to stop sign & turn left on Roosa Gap Rd. 3½ miles to y in the road- bear left. At stop sign right on Pleasant valley Rd. Follow to Rte. 52 (about 1½ miles). Left on 52. Go about 2 miles & turn right on Cragsmoor Rd, go about 1¼ miles & park at the Cragsmoor post office(Bing). It is where the road makes a Y. We will run out to Bear Cliff for one of the most beautiful sights in the Gunks. From Orange County take exit 115 & follow Roosa Gap Rd. and above directions. Thursday July 7, 2011: Sullivan Striders Run/Walk - Alternate Location With the O&W Rails to Trails race 4M run & 2M walk fast approaching (July 17th), we’ve had some requests for a training run on the course. Soooooo, this week’s run we will do just that. We will meet in Mountaindale, NY(Google) between 5:30-5:45. Coming from Monticello & points west as you go down Main Street, make your first left on to Post Hill Road then your immediate first left by the basketball courts – there is a paved parking area at the trail head and old train station. Bring something to drink!!! If you need more detailed directions – please let President Klemen know! We will take off by 6:00 pm the latest. Be sure to bring some fluids as it is supposed to be hot.
Wednesday July 6, 2011: Sullivan Striders Scholarship Committee - Decision night! All Striders are welcome to come and be involved in this great process of picking this years Scholarship recipients. We get to read essays submitted by students and recommendation letters submitted by their coaches and then decide how Falling Colors proceeds are donated. Tom Manza will be at the Bean Bag at 6 p.m. (exit 104 of Rte. 17). He will have people follow him to his and Maryann Manza's house at 6:00 pm. Food and beverages to follow plus of course, great company.

Thursday June 23, 2011: Annual Striders Alternate Run/Walk from Kelly's Place 6:00pm Claryville, NY. Another year to do this much anticipated run, walk & get together. Everyone needs to come to this if for nothing more than the beauty of the area. If you want to follow a few people up from Liberty, get off at westbound exit 100A. Go to the end of the ramp and we will wait in that parking lot from 5:30-5:40pm. Carpooling from there will be possible. Bring a snack, beverage or some grated cheese(You never know)! Afterwards, we'll follow Kelly to her house for some food and fellowship. From her house to return home, go out driveway, turn right onto Hunter Rd. - at T, turn right onto the Claryville Rd. At the botttom of the hill - a T - turn right onto Rt 55 (west to Liberty). About 10 miles, take exit to Rt 17 East. (left hand turn sends you east towards Grahamsville, NY)

Thursday June 16, 2011: Annual Bag Stuffing & Finish Line Litter Pluck for RHR&R Meet at 5:00pm at the Frontier lower entrance to help race director Suzie Loughlin do the bag stuffing for RHR&R. Wallkill Cemetery (Midway Road), where Herby is laid to rest, is approx. two miles from their house. We will run/walk to the cemetery to visit Herby’s grave and then head back to Joyce’s and enjoy her company. I told Joyce not to “fuss” for us… we will bring snacks and drinks. So please bring a snack to share. It is going to be terribly hot so PLEASE remember to bring plenty of water and/or Gatorade! Thursday April 7, 2011: Alternate Striders Club Run This week’s Thursday night run/walk will begin at Haven Rd. Wurtsboro, NY (Google). We will meet at 5:45’ish so that we may take off for our run/walk at 6:00pm. We will do an “out and back” around the beautiful Basha Kill Wetlands for a total of 4 to 6 miles. Take it out as far as you like – just remember, you have to turn around and come back! After running Haven road we will take either a left or right onto S Road which is the final stretch of road of the Wurtsboro Mt. 30K. Just remember on the way back to turn back onto Haven Rd. to get to the cars which we park close to Rte. 209. Snacks and drinks are welcome so if you can get to a store, grab your favorite. March 6, 2011: Hudson Valley 15K Practice Runs Meet at Bella Luna(Google map) at 9:00am to run the course in preparation for the HV15K. Practice runs will be 3/6, 3/19 & 4/3.
Sunday- February 27, 2011: The Newburgh Winter Series 10:00 AM 1.8 mile race start at Thomas Bull Memorial Park(Bing) in Campbell Hall next to Montgomery in Orange County, only 35 minutes from Rock Hill. This is a delightful series of five races, with distances of 1.8 (Jan 2), 2.3 (Jan 16), 3.1 (Jan 30), 4.0 (Feb 13) and 1.8 miles (Feb 27). Points are awarded for participation (one point per race); placing (10, 7, 5, 3, 1); and consistency (five point bonus for completing all five races). The cost is minimal ($25 for the series, $6 per race), the shirts are lovely (long-sleeved with no ads!); the awards ceremony after the last race is special - breakfast for all, trophies for many. Race dates are January 2, 16, 30, February 13 & 27. Registration starts at 9:00 AM. Walkers welcome. Any questions, contact Race Director Spero Chumas at scny42@aol.com . Water and Gatorade will be placed in bright bags and are at miles 3, 4.5, 8.5, and just short of 10 (approximate). The course can be shortened easily to 6.5 & 9 miles for those just starting out and not wanting to do the full distance. Written directions and maps will also be provided. Water and Gatorade for all training runs are provided by Race Directors, Myriam Loor (845)866-1345 and Kathleen Rifkin (845)527-3825.
